23 Jan 2013(map) The good news is that Java Dive offers five different burgers. The even better news: you can upgrade any of them to Wagyu beef for just $2.50. Wagyu originated in Japan (although this beef is raised right here in Texas), and is said to be more tender and tasty due to marbling. Above, the 1/3-lb All-American, with cheddar cheese and your choice of chips or salad. Served up on a house-made whole-wheat bun, it’ll spoil you for any other burger. By the way, Java Dive was just featured in Austin Woman Magazine as one of the best gluten-free places in town. Read about it here.

I love JavaDive’s breakfast, but I was terribly disappointed with the Wagyu burger a couple weeks ago. I think they cooked the burger on a panini press that simply doesn’t get hot enough or something, as the burger was fully cooked through, but had absolutely no char marks or anything on it and had a bad/chewy texture/consistency. My S.O. took a bite and concurred. We love the concept but not the execution, at least, for the Wagyu burger or their pizzas for that matter. Again, the breakfast there is great. Sadly, Waterloo in Bee Cave just discontinued their Wagyu burger. Hyde Park Grille does a good one.
Ed. Reply: Sorry to hear that! Maybe they’ve changed methods – note the grill marks on this one (kind of hidden by the cheese), and it was super-tender. Sobani (across the street) does Wagyu sliders with different toppings every day – one day it was foie gras!
