Taqueria Don Mario

(map) For a nice change of pace from Tex-Mex, how about Mex-Mex? Don Mario and his family hail from Mexico City, and they run this small place (five tables) featuring the dishes of central Mexico. They’ve even imported an authentic al pastor oven to make the tasty little pork dish known as tacos al pastor. You can order tacos individually or combine them with refries and rice. Above: From left, chuleta, or grilled pork chop, with chopped onion. Center, the pork al pastor with chunks of pineapple. That’s bistec, or steak, on the right. The salsa bar offers six salsas to try on your tacos. Mario says that in Mexico City, different food stands specialize in different dishes. His family has brought all those dishes – huaraches, sopes, tortas, tacos, alambres – together in a place small in size, but big on flavor.

Mario is the son of the owner, Don Mario. The menu is so authentic, it’s primarily in Spanish. But don’t worry; Mario is happy to explain things and offer suggestions.

Here, the huarache is not a sandal, but a flat masa dough that’s filled inside with black beans and then topped with your choice of meats or vegetables. This one is topped with pork al pastor and crumbled cotija cheese. If you can’t decide which sauce you want, get both: half of this has red ancho-chile sauce, the other half, green tomatillo.

The hearty posole was a huge, steamy bowl of soup filled with hominy and chunks of pork. It looks spicy, but the ground red chiles that give it that rich color are actually mild. Served with radish, oregano, lettuce and tostadas on the side.

Sopes are small but delicious appetizers. Masa dough is baked on a griddle, then curved slightly to hold a filling of refried black beans, shredded white cheese and lettuce, and a spicy green chile sauce.
