(map) You don’t have to have a sunburn to eat here, but if you do, you’ll fit right in. This laid-back place on the lake has recently been adding some new menu items in keeping with their colorful, Key West vibe. Above, the grouper ceviche, a fresh-tasting mix of pico de gallo and grouper “cooked” by citrus.
Most folks come in after a day on the lake, wearing bathing suits, board shorts and flip-flops. There’s no AC, but with the doors rolled up, the fans and misters do a pretty good job of keeping things cool. There’s an outside deck as well.
The cool and crisp wedge salad is a half-head of iceberg lettuce drizzled with blue-cheese dressing and sprinkled with sharp gorgonzola crumbles. So refreshing after a day in the sun!
The chicken-wing basket is a half-pound of surprisingly meaty wings, not the slightest bit greasy. There’s a nice bit of heat to them, but they aren’t too spicy. Also served with blue-cheese dressing.
Shades has a great view of Lake Travis (or what’s left of it). Enjoy it now!
Please note that Shades is open Wednesday through Sunday, closed on Monday and Tuesday.
