5 Mar 2011Rodeo Austin has been around for 75 years. Last Saturday, they finally got around to throwing their first-ever wine-tasting event. What a blast! It was held in the swanky Starlight Terrace Ballroom at The Oasis on Lake Travis, an outstanding setting for tasting a lot of standout wines. Over 200 people showed up to eat, drink and enjoy music by the band Blender. The event raised over $10,000 for a Texas youth scholarship fund.
First things first: champagne by Moet, in your choice of Brut or pink. They brought clever little plastic “flutes” that fit onto the bottles for easy sipping.
Rodeo Austin greeters checked everyone in and made sure you got your wristband. No sips without one!
The Starlight ballroom is big, so there were two buffets with plenty of good food – even desserts.
The weather was perfect for rolling open the doors overlooking the lake. There were 16 of the best Texas wineries pouring, five premium wineries from Napa and Sonoma, and Spec’s hosted a table of eight more California wines. As the night wore on, things started to get crowded, especially around the popular Napa boutique wine “g.” They ended up winning the People’s Choice red. Here’s to next year’s event!
To promote the event, the rodeo kicked things off (so to speak) with a poster by award-winning design shop Curiosity Shoppe. Interestingly, they designed the look for Way Out West Austin, too!

Where can we buy clever little plastic “flutes” that fit onto the bottles for easy sipping.
Ed. Reply: These were from Spec’s.
