Poodie’s Hilltop Bar & Grill

Poodie’s is famous for live music, and a lot of big names have graced this stage — guys like Ray Benson, Gary P. Nunn, even Willie. But every Thursday, they have a free early show of guys you might not have met yet. Singer-songwriter Scott Wayne entertained us with songs by Johnny Paycheck and Kris Kristofferson, as well as some of his own outlaw originals. The show starts early, at 7, so you won’t have to miss work the next day. And since there’s no cover charge, instead you can save your money for beer, Poodie’s cuisine, and tipping the musicians.

The famous Poodie Burger, with grilled green chiles and onions, topped with double pepperjack cheese. This burger weighs in at a hefty 1/3 lb, so be sure to work up a serious appetite dancing and playing pool. The fries are made to order, nicely crisp and crunchy.

The Poodie Melt is the same as the Poodie Burger, except served on buttery Texas Toast. The grilled green chiles give the burger a nice New Mexico flavor.

We didn’t run afoul of any cigars, but there is plenty of cigarette smoking inside. That’s because there are pool tables inside, too. And shuffleboard. And lots of TVs. Pool is free on Thursdays, along with the live music.

Poodie's is serious about their music.
