2 Jul 2012(map) The farther you get from New Orleans, aka The Big Easy, the harder it is to find an authentic muffuletta. But these wily Cajuns score another hit using real N’Awlins ingredients. They start with the requisite round loaf of Gambino’s French bread, soft but crusty with sesame seeds. They pile on thinly sliced layers of ham, provolone cheese, and salami to a depth of 1-1/4″. Then – the coup de grace, the piece de (complete lack of) resistance – genuine olive salad from NOLA’s Central Grocery. Nothing else matches the flavor of this blend of pickled olives, carrot, and cauliflower, marinated in a garlicky olive oil. They also sell the olive salad by the pound. Sandwich, $5.99. Memories of the French Quarter, priceless.
