Messina Hof Hill Country

(map) One of Texas’ oldest and most-awarded wineries just opened a new tasting room near Fredericksburg. Messina Hof has been making wine in Bryan since 1977, but now is taking advantage of the wine-trail momentum on Highway 290 with a beautiful new showcase for their wines.

Overseen by the owners’ son Paul, the tasting room is a large, open space. Tastings are $10 and ¬†include five choices and a signature glass. ¬†There are no less than 45 choices on the tasting menu, ranging from whites and reds to port and dessert wines. You can buy extra tastings using their “wooden nickel” system.

One of several areas for tastings, this bar also offered wines by the bottle or glass. You can relax at the cafe tables or outside in the garden. Meanwhile, on the other side of the bar, even the kids were getting into the act. The little fellow in the stroller has clearly had one too many. Kidding! That’s the owners’ son Paul behind the baby in the yellow shirt.

Here’s another tasting bar. The walls are lined with most of Messina Hof’s many offerings, and there’s also an assortment of foods and wine accessories for sale. Below, a live band played behind the Italian wedding gazebo, a symbol of the owners’ Italian heritage. Out back are a few cottages to rent should you feel like spending a day or two visiting the many wineries in the area.

Great post! I really want to make it out there one of these days.

Ed. Reply: Thanks! You should – no less than 14 wineries out there to visit!
