La Fuente’s

In: Drinking|Eating

UPDATE: closed (map) Here’s a new angle on margaritas: Square, so you get more (do the math). La Fuente’s just bravely opened in a location which has seen the demise of at least three previous restaurants, so let’s toast to their future success. So far, so good, with an excellent house rita, fresh-tasting chips and salsa, and a simple menu of Tex-Mex classics.

On the menu: Enchiladas, chalupas, nachos, queso, even those queens of the stone age, crispy tacos. Above, the chicken enchilada, tender dark meat rolled in a tortilla, then swathed in the comforting sauce we’ve all loved since childhood. Plus two kinds of cheese!

Everyone loves bean and cheese chalupas, especially with a side of creamy guacamole. The serving is smallish, but that’s why it’s called a side.

They’ve livened up the strip-center location with stone, tile, colorful walls and art hanging everywhere. There are also lots of TVs around if you need to keep up with the game (and of course you do; this is Texas). The bar features more TVs and taller tables for eating and drinking.

Is this the same La Fuentes that’s been in south Austin for decades?

Ed. Reply: They say yes.
