Exotic Resort Zoo

(map) It’s pretty cool to visit a zoo where the animals aren’t the ones in cages, people are! This is actually more like a ranch. Hundreds of animals roam freely over 137 rolling acres dotted with lakes. There are no lions or tigers or bears (in fact, no predatory beasts), but 80 other species are represented, including buffalo, camels, kangaroos, ostriches, zebras and all kinds of African gazelles and antelope. If you really want to play Dr. Doolittle, there are four B&B cabins for rent in the middle of the ranch.

You buy a bucket of feed, hop into a tram, and a guide drives you through the ranch. Most of the animals are super-friendly and will eat out of your hand.

There’s a herd of zebras, which supposedly bite, so their food gets tossed on the ground. Many of the species are from Africa, so they do well in Texas’ climate.

Ostriches peck, so they get to help themselves right out of the feed bucket.

The names were flying by, but I’m pretty sure this was some sort of water buffalo.

There’s a petting zoo, where kids can feed tame African pygmy goats and different kinds of deer.
