Bluebonnet Cafe

(map) The first thing you notice about Bluebonnet Cafe is it’s popular. As in, there’s-a-line-out-the-door popular. You wait a while in the line outside, then when you get inside, you wait in another line. You think, this place must really be good! They’ve been dishing up breakfast, home cooking and pies for 89 years, and in this location since 1946. Marble Falls is in the middle of granite country, and inside, all the table tops are slabs of granite. Texas memorabilia and bluebonnet pictures decorate the walls, and souvenir t-shirts and cookbooks are for sale.

Even with three dining rooms inside, the place is busy, bustling with folks of all ages. Servers whiz by with breakfast, the plate-lunch special and pies, pies, pies.

Breakfast is served all day long. Their biscuits are light and fluffy, served with cream gravy. Pats of real butter are on hand to swirl into the creamy grits.

One of the plate-lunch specials, fried catfish comes with your choice of three sides, including real mashed potatoes with a little of the potato skins left in. The catfish was light and crispy.

Bluebonnet bakes 14 different kinds of pie every day: apple, peach, cherry, chocolate cream, banana cream. The most popular is coconut cream. The one above is German chocolate cream, with pecans, shredded coconut and real whipped cream. So lusciously rich! (Normally the pieces are huge; our server had it cut in half before we realized what was happening.)

We drove by this the other day – now I wish we stopped to get some pie!
