(map) This popular Houston chain just opened its first location in Austin, and chose a spot out West for the honors. Located near River Place, Black Walnut serves up burgers, sandwiches, salads and pastas, but also has an amazing focus on breakfast (more on that later). There’s an emphasis on making as many things in-house as possible, like soups, salad dressings, pasta sauces. Above, one of several grilled-cheese options – this one features peppered bacon, tomato slices, and lots of gooey American cheese between grilled slices of challah bread.
Five burgers are on the menu, and one must is the Tatonka burger, above. A juicy bison patty rests on a grilled whole-wheat bun, accompanied by crispy fries and spicy mustard.
The order counter. It’s a fast-casual concept, meaning you order at the counter, then a pager alerts you that your food is ready.
There are several dining areas: the bar, above. An inside cafe area, below. There’s also an outdoor patio, farther down.
The cafe features lots of desserts, including cookies, cakes and gelato. Below, another dining room for bigger groups.
