(map) Just outside Johnson City, there’s a place that’s literally like no place else on earth. Years ago, the artist Benini settled on 140 acres here. Throughout the rolling grounds, he began to install contemporary sculptures by artists from all over the world. Today, over 140 pieces from 57 artists are on display, and it’s a striking exhibit. As you drive along a long, dusty road, one after another is revealed, perched on a hillside or seated under the trees. Some pieces are for sale, and others are part of the permanent collection, like Paladin the longhorn, above.
The materials used are all contemporary – glass and chrome, metal and stone. The Ranch is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is free.
Benini’s house is high on a hilltop, with a 360-degree view of his ranch. This is one of his many kinetic, or moving, pieces. Far below it you can see one of the meandering roads with sculptures stationed along it.
